The View From The Hotel

W.Bro. Keith Buist recently on holiday in New Zealand visited Lodge Idris 452 in Christchurch. on 24th February 2010. The photograph shows Keith with the Worshipful Master of Lodge Idris 452.

This photograph was taken at the February 2010 meeting of Camberley Lodge when W.Bro Keith Buist initiated his grandson Bro. Christopher White into the lodge.

The occasion was particularly memorable because on the same evening, Keith’s son Brian, Junior Deacon of the Lodge, was Raised to the Third Degree in a ceremony immediately preceding the initiation.  Furthermore, Keith’s brother-in-law, Bro. Clark Brolly, Inner Guard of the Lodge, was present at the meeting, to make this a truly remarkable family occasion.

CAMBERLEY LODGE VISIT TO SCOTLAND 11th – 14th NOVEMBER 2009

The visiting party were (from left to right)

W.Bro. Stephen Taylor
W.Bro. Keith Buist
W.Bro. Gerald Inglis
W.Bro. Alastair MacKenzie
Bro. Barry Strachan
W.Bro. David Matthews

They stayed at Kincaid House Hotel, Milton of Campsie.

These photographs were taken at the first visit, to Lodge St Bryde No. 579 in Uddingston and show Bro. David Shaw, Right Worshipful Master of  St Bryde Lodge No. 579, Bro. Frank Richmond, Right Worshipful Master of  Eastmuir Lodge No. 1126 (the Lodge undertaking the degree work) and Bro. James L. Jack, Provincial Grand Master of Lanarkshire (Middle Ward).  Eastmuir Lodge undertook the Third Degree Ceremony and raised the candidate.

On the second day we visited The Grand Lodge of Scotland in Edinburgh

Followed by Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh.

On the evening of the second day we visited W.Bro. Keith Buist’s mother lodge, Caledonian St John R.A. Campsie No. 195 to see another 3rd Degree Ceremony performed by visiting Lodge Barhill Twechar No. 1444.

The first photograph (on the left) shows (left to Right)

In the second photograph they are joined by W.Bro. Stephen Taylor and W.Bro. Keith Buist (in his Scottish regalia) with Bro. John Reid McCormack PM, absenting himself.

Finally, on the third day (after a minor diversion to a whisky distillery) the visiting party were privileged to visit Lodge Commercial No. 360 at the Neptune Masonic Centre in Clifford Street Glasgow, for an Installation Ceremony attended by 136 brethren from Scotland and England who were packed into a lovely temple and royally entertained afterwards at Harmony, which continued until well after midnight.

The new Right Worshipful Master Bro. William Andrew McMahon was installed by Installing Masters Bro. James Fleming PM 360, Bro. Robert Gracey PM 360 and Bro. William Daniels PM 419.

The ceremony was also honoured by the visit of a Provincial party which included Bro. Donald J. Riddle, Substitute Provincial Grand Master, who was not allowed to leave the Harmony until he and members of his deputation had replied to the song “Will you no come back again?” by singing the refrain “Yes we will come back again!”

One of the objectives of the visit was to establish a reciprocal fraternal relationship between Camberley Lodge No. 5591 and Lodge Caledonian St. John No. 195.  This was certainly achieved and we hope that it will lead to further visits, including one by Lodge Caledonian, together with fellow lodges, to perform a demonstration ceremony during Camberley Lodge’s 75th Anniversary celebrations in year 2011.

Sequel To The Ben Nevis Challenge

Two years ago a team of Surrey Masons and friends climbed Ben Nevis in a sponsored event for the 2008 Festival. Three of us, W.Bro. David Matthews of Camberley Lodge, W.Bro. Neil Egginton of Bagshot Lodge and his wife Trudi, had such a great time that we decided to renew the experience by climbing Scafell Pike last year and then Snowdon this year. However, at the last moment Neil and Trudi fell ill, leaving David to complete the set himself on 12th July 2009.

It was a great experience and it didn’t rain this time! Honest!

These photographs were taken at the Camberley Lodge meeting of 3rd March 2009 when W.Bro. Trevor Leonard, Worshipful Master of Holdfast Lodge No. No. 30 (S.A.C.), Adelaide, Australia, presented a Camberley Lodge Past Master’s Jewel to Camberley Lodge Worshipful Master W.Bro. Don Foster, who in turn presented W.Bro. Leonard with a copy of the lodge history.

The Jewel was originally presented to W.Bro. P.W.S. (Percy) White after serving as Worshipful Master of Camberley Lodge in 1949-1950.

W.Bro. Leonard was presented with the jewel after serving as Worshipful Master of Lewis Lodge No. 77 (S.A.C.) in Adelaide.  After the lodge closed he felt that it should be returned to Camberley Lodge.

But how did it find its way to Lewis Lodge in Adelaide?

Three Sons Initiated into Freemasonry

Significant events occurred on 6th November 2007 when Bro. David Buist was initiated into Camberley Lodge and on 5th February 2008 when Bro. Brian Buist was Initiated into Camberley Lodge.   Both are sons of W.Bro. Keith Buist, who joined Camberley Lodge on 3rd October 2006 from Lodge Caledonian St. John Royal Arch Campsie No. 195.   Scottish Constitution.   Whilst it is a considerable achievement to initiate two sons into Freemasonry, Bros. David and Brian Buist were the second and third sons that W.Bro. Keith had initiated, since his other son Alan had been previously initiated by him in Scotland .   At the initiation of Bro. Brian, Camberley Lodge Secretary expressed his hope that W.Bro. Keith Buist and his three sons would emulate the Lodge's Primus Worshipful Master W.Bro. Percy White and his three sons who all served as Worshipful Master of Camberley Lodge!

Ben Nevis Challenge

During May of 2007 a team of Surrey Masons climbed Ben Nevis in Scotland, through driving rain, hail, snow and storm force winds, in support of the Surrey Province 2008 Festival.

As part of the team W.Bro. David Matthews, Secretary of Camberley Lodge, reached the 4,409 ft high summit and raised close to £1,000 in sponsorship.

The week end was a great success despite the appalling weather and a great time was had by all!
